"Figure Study"
12" X 16" pencil on paper

Magnify View

The Royal Academy Schools were set up by King George III as a patron to the Arts. Admission was highly competative with over 1200 students applying anually and only 20 being chosen from that number. Basset, although an American, was accepted. At that time tuition was free and the first year at the Academy Schools the students were expected to spend entirely in the drawing School. This delicate figure study was done by Basset during that first year at the Academy and shows the influence of some of his teachers, not least of these influences was Mr. Peter Grenham, R.A. who at that time was the acting Keeper of the Schools.
